Tottenham have had an abysmal 2025-26 campaign as they sit one point above the relegation zone. They have seven games to save their status as a Premier League club next season.
It’s no surprise that Tottenham have now had three managers this season. They started with Thomas Frank before replacing him with interim manager Igor Tudor. They have now appointed Roberto De Zerbi as a permanent manager.
While managers have taken plenty of blame, many players have also faced plenty of backlash. Captain Cristian Romero has been on the receiving end of criticism from fans and the media, especially due to his suspensions.
Cristian Romero shares thoughts on Tottenham’s current situation
Romero signed a new contract last summer at Tottenham, which will expire in 2029. However, he has still been linked with an exit this summer, with the likes of Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid keeping tabs.
When asked about his time at Tottenham after Argentina’s friendlies this month, the centre-back told the media (h/t Ole):
“I’m not really having the best time there, to be honest. But beyond everything, I have to get myself right, I have to focus on the club now.”
However, Romero did assert his commitment to help Tottenham avoid relegation, saying:
“I need to switch on the Tottenham mindset, try to get out of the bad situation we’re in and, like I always do, give everything in every training session, in every match, and try to move forward.”

Romero was also linked with a potential move to Atletico Madrid last summer. However, the deal didn’t materialize, and he ended up signing a contract extension at Spurs instead.
Since arriving from Atalanta in 2021, he has made 155 appearances for Tottenham, helping them win the UEFA Europa League.
Tottenham will find it hard to convince Romero to stay
While he has had his ups and downs in a Tottenham shirt, Romero has shown himself to be an incredible centre-back. He helped end Spurs’ trophy drought, and his addition to the Argentina team also ended theirs.
When available, Romero was one of the top-three Tottenham players in two seasons under Ange Postecoglou. His leadership and composure were crucial in them winning the Europa League. This shows that under a good manager, he can be one of the best defenders in the world.

However, even if Spurs stay in the Premier League, the board has failed to match Romero’s ambitions. He has also publicly hit out at the club’s hierarchy multiple times via social media posts.
With him turning 28 later this month, he is most likely to look for a move away. Moreover, if he performs well at the World Cup this summer, just as he did in Argentina’s triumphant campaign in 2022, Romero will have no shortage of offers.
