Micky van de Ven believes Tottenham’s transfer ambition has restored confidence inside the squad after two consecutive 17th-place finishes.
The defender praised the club’s £237million recruitment drive and described last season’s performances as “unacceptable”.
Spurs have broken their transfer record twice this summer. Mateus Fernandes arrived from West Ham United for £85million before Sandro Tonali completed a £100million move from Newcastle United.
Jan Paul van Hecke has also joined for £52million, while Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dúbravka arrived on free transfers.
Van de Ven welcomes Tottenham transfer ambition
“It’s really good that you can see the club has made some changes,” Van de Ven told The Times.
The Netherlands international believes Tottenham’s spending demonstrates “new ambition” to players who remained through two difficult campaigns.
“Last season was a stressful season, unacceptable from our side,” Van de Ven added.
Roberto De Zerbi helped Spurs avoid relegation on the final day last season. Van de Ven has since praised the head coach’s passion and his determination to establish a more attacking style in north London.
Tottenham’s recruitment is not finished. De Zerbi wants another two important attackers, with Manchester City winger Savinho among his leading targets.
ReadTottenham reported on Monday that the Brazilian had followed Tonali on Instagram as talks over a potential move continued. The social media activity does not confirm a transfer, but Spurs are expected to strengthen their forward line before the window closes.
Van de Ven believes the Tottenham transfer ambition has provided the platform for a fresh start. The pressure now falls on the players to turn record investment into a return to European competition.
