Cristian Romero’s Tottenham future has emerged as a massive talking point in recent weeks.
The Argentine signed a new deal in the summer of 2025 after winning the UEFA Europa League. However, things have quickly gone downhill for him as he continues to endure problems on and off the pitch.
Under Thomas Frank, he struggled for form and consistency, picking up two red cards over the course of half a season. Aside from the pitch, his social media attack on the club’s hierarchy made headlines as Tottenham’s misery seemed to compound.
And now, Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the future of the Tottenham captain, who will undoubtedly generate a lot of interest this summer.
Romero wanted by ‘several important clubs’
Romero has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, who Tottenham have been drawn against in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League.
Yesterday, reports from England claimed Tottenham wouldn’t be against parting with Romero in the summer, as their own problems, coupled with the player’s wishes, could lead to a mutual separation.
Romano has appeared to double down on those claims, suggesting that a handful of clubs have already signaled their desire to sign the Argentine defender.
“On Cuti Romero, I think this is an important one,” said Romano on his YouTube channel.
“He signed a new contract at Tottenham last summer, but my understanding is that several important clubs are calling to ask about the situation.
“I think it’s absolutely normal. One of the best center-backs in the world, a World Cup winner, crucial for Tottenham to win the Europa League last summer.”
It has also been confirmed that Atletico tried to sign him last summer, which is a sign that their interest is long-standing.

“One year ago, Atletico Madrid wanted him and it was not possible to proceed,” continued Romano.
“I think there’s going to be plenty of clubs interested in Romero. So, it could be one of the big names to follow in this summer transfer window.
“Again, let’s see what happens with Tottenham, whether they stay in the Premier League or the Championship – in terms of the valuation of the player and the financial situation. But we will see what’s going to happen with this one.”
Defensive overhaul loading for Tottenham
Micky van de Ven has refused to sign a new deal at Tottenham and could be on the move this summer. If both Romero and the Dutchman were to depart, the North London outfit would be seriously devoid of central defensive options.
Luka Vuskovic is also wanted by Barcelona as he continues to enjoy a loan spell for the ages at Hamburg.
However, Tottenham should stand firm on the fact that the Croatian defender isn’t for sale, as they potentially have a generational talent in their hands.
In terms of incomings, Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi has been linked with a move to Tottenham, with his contract set to expire at the end of the campaign.
However, the elegant defender is wanted by a host of clubs across Europe, so Spurs first need to secure their Premier League status and appoint a new, permanent manager before doubling down on their transfer targets.
As for Romero, he seems to have run his race at Tottenham and a mutual separation is the best for all parties involved.
