Micky van de Ven has been a key player for Tottenham Hotspur since signing for the club under Ange Postecoglou in the summer of 2024.
The Dutch international played a key role in the UEFA Europa League triumph last season and his heroic goal-line clearance against Manchester United will be remembered for decades.
This season, however, Van de Ven has looked off colour – much like the rest of the Tottenham squad – as the North London outfit continue their slippery slide in the Premier League.
They are currently 16th in the table and suffered a 4-1 hammering at the hands of Arsenal on Sunday in Igor Tudor’s first game in charge of the club.
Van de Ven claimed Tottenham can fare a lot better in the coming weeks as the Croatian has just taken over the reigns at the club.
However, with the prospect of relegation looming large, reports from England suggest he could be on the move in the summer.
Van de Ven hesitant to renew Tottenham contract
With Cristian Romero suspended, Van de Ven wore the captain’s armband and started at the heart of the backline alongside Joao Palhinha and Radu Dragusin.
Tottenham never looked comfortable as Arsenal ran riot – particularly in the second half – as two goals apiece from Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres gave them a convincing win away from home.
After the game, Tudor claimed Tottenham were ‘full of problems,’ which is a sign that the job is going to be much harder than he anticipated.
And now, things appear to be going further south for the Lilywhites. According to TEAMtalk, Van de Ven is considering his future, with Real Madrid, Chelsea and Liverpool interested in securing his signature.
Sources close to the Dutchman say he is unconvinced by Tottenham’s prospects and direction as they face a battle to retain their Premier League status.
While he has little belief that remaining at Tottenham is the best option for his career, the report also states that his main focus right now is to secure their Premier League status, after which he will sit down with the club to have a conversation about his future.
Tottenham can’t afford to lose Van de Ven
Reports link Romero to Atletico Madrid, suggesting the Argentine may seek a fresh start in 2026 following a difficult season.
His exit would leave Van de Ven as Tottenham’s undisputed defensive anchor and a prime candidate for the captain’s armband.
He hasn’t been at his best this season, but under a new manager, there is no reason the Dutchman can’t reach the heights of last season.
Whether or not Van de Ven leaves, the need for another central defender at the club couldn’t be clearer.
Reports link Marcos Senesi to Tottenham on a free transfer. The Argentine has entered the final months of his Bournemouth contract this summer and has shown no interest in signing an extension.
However, with Barcelona and Juventus among other clubs keen on him, the North London outfit first need to secure their Premier League status, put a new, permanent manager in place before making an offer for him.
