At a glance
- Guglielmo Vicario likely to leave Tottenham Hotspur
- Robin Risser wanted by Tottenham
- Newcastle United also in the race for Lens stopper
Guglielmo Vicario’s topsy-turvy three-year spell at Tottenham Hotspur could come to an end this summer.
The Italian goalkeeper has had his moments, but his quality on the ball and kicking have been questioned, while his inability to gather set pieces has cost the club dearly.
Vicario has been linked with Inter Milan and Juventus, and with Tottenham not against a sale, a return to Serie A looks likely for the former Empoli man.
And now, the North London outfit have identified his replacement, although they face a tough battle to secure his signature.
Robin Risser the chosen one to replace Vicario
In recent months, speculation surrounding Tottenham’s goalkeeping situation has dominated the back pages.
Aside from Vicario, Antonin Kinsky’s recent horror show against Atletico Madrid has led to suggestions that he could move on to rejuvenate his career elsewhere, although a decision isn’t expected to be made until the summer.

In February, we reported that Robin Risser is at the top of Tottenham’s five-man shortlist to replace Vicario, with Manchester City’s James Trafford and Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu also featuring in the list.
And now, Jeunes Footeux have doubled down on those claims, reporting that Tottenham have made ‘concrete enquiries’ to sign the talented goalkeeper from Lens.
They also mention ‘fierce competition’ from Newcastle United, who are looking for an undisputed number one between the sticks despite already having Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale.
Calciomercato reported yesterday that Inter’s sporting director, Piero Ausilio, traveled to London this week to hold talks for Vicario.
And now, Tottenham seem to be pushing on with a move for Risser, which is a sign that the Lens goalkeeper could well be their chosen one between the sticks.
Risser described as a ‘great’ goalkeeper
As relayed by GFFN, Lens manager Pierre Sage appeared to suggest that Risser could leave the club at the end of the season, which bodes well for Tottenham’s pursuit of the young goalkeeper.
And his stats this season show exactly why he could be their savior in front of goal, with Kinsky and Brandon Austin not ready to take over from Vicario, should he depart.
In October 2025, Sage spoke extensively about Risser, describing him as a ‘great’ goalkeeper with a bright future ahead of him.
“For me, great goalkeepers are capable of a very quick rebound,” said Sage via Lensois.
“He’s a very great goalkeeper. So he’ll have a very quick rebound. And that’s why we had no trouble putting him in front of you today. We were talking about being down a man.”
Tottenham appear to be following a handful of goalkeepers to replace Vicario, but judging by all the reporting over the past month, Risser well and truly looks like the one they’ve narrowed down on.
He is yet to be capped by France under Didier Deschamps, but if he carries on playing like this, don’t be surprised to see him at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
