Tottenham find their ‘Penalty King’ – Fabrizio Romano confirms £23m Vicario successor is ready to move

Tottenham Hotspur are set for a summer of change as they continue to be dragged into a relegation battle in the Premier League.

Igor Tudor has lost each of his first two games in charge of the club, but Spurs are still four points above 18th-placed West Ham United.

Based on how the rest of the season goes, the North London outfit could make a handful of changes to their squad under their new manager.

Guglielmo Vicario is one player who could leave Tottenham as he continues to endure a torrid season between the sticks.

And now, Fabrizio Romano has dropped a fresh transfer update on Noah Atubolu, who Spurs have scouted as a potential replacement for the Italian.

Noah Atubolu a realistic option for Tottenham

The 23-year-old goalkeeper has played every minute for Freiburg this season and has delivered a string of magnificent displays.

Reports in Germany claimed last week that Tottenham are keeping tabs on Atubolu, with the Bundesliga side valuing him at around £23m.

Romano has offered Spurs fresh hope of signing the player, although he confirmed that ‘several European clubs’ are watching Atubolu, who has thus far shown no signs of signing an extension.

He wrote in his X account: “Noah Atubolu could leave Freiburg in the summer with several European top clubs monitoring his progress.

“Current deal expires in June 2027, no plans to extend as summer move is a possibility.”

Who is Noah Atubolu?

Despite being just 23, Atubolu has played over 100 games for Freiburg, so he’s got invaluable top-flight experience under his belt.

In late 2025, he became the first goalkeeper in Bundesliga history to save five successive penalties as he denied Werder Bremen’s Romano Schmid to write himself into the record books.

During the 2024-25 campaign, the towering goalkeeper set a club record for going 576 minutes without conceding a goal in the Bundesliga, indicating that he is a commanding presence between the sticks.

However, much like Vicario, Atubolu has a chink in his armour, according to The Scouting App.

The Bundesliga’s ‘penalty king’ still has room for improvement when it comes to commanding the penalty area, particularly while dealing with set-pieces, so Spurs will surely have one eye on this before deciding whether or not to make a move.

Romano claimed in January that Atubolu signed with Epic Sports as a new agency. Usually, when a player changes representation, it could be interpreted that a transfer is on the cards, so Atubolu’s future will undoubtedly be one to watch in the summer.
