Tottenham have rejected an offer from Newcastle United for Archie Gray and have made clear they do not want to sell the midfielder.
Newcastle remain interested in the 20-year-old, but Spurs have not reached any agreement and their stance is unchanged.
Fabrizio Romano reported that Newcastle sent an offer for Gray on Wednesday, only for Tottenham to reject it.
Cartilage Free Captain also noted the concern among supporters over whether Newcastle’s interest could become linked to the separate Sandro Tonali talks.
For Tottenham, the decision is an important one.
Gray is not just another young squad player. He can play in midfield, cover at full-back and gives Roberto De Zerbi a level of tactical flexibility that would be expensive to replace.
Why Tottenham Want To Keep Gray
Tottenham signed Gray from Leeds United in 2024 and still see him as part of the club’s long-term plan.
That stance matters more in a summer when Spurs are spending heavily elsewhere. Sky Sports reports that De Zerbi wants to rebuild the midfield and could target several additions.
Spurs have also agreed a club-record deal for Tonali, while Mateus Fernandes has joined from West Ham.
Read Tottenham has already covered how Fernandes’ arrival gives De Zerbi another major midfield option. That does not make Gray expendable.
If anything, it sharpens his value.
De Zerbi will need ready-made quality, but he will also need players who can cover different roles across a long season. Gray fits that category.
Read Tottenham has also looked at how Lucas Bergvall’s playing-time demand has created another midfield pathway issue. Gray’s situation is different, but the principle is similar.
Tottenham are trying to strengthen quickly without losing the young players who can still grow inside the rebuild.
Rejecting Newcastle’s offer was the obvious move. It also gives De Zerbi a clear signal: Gray remains part of the protected core.
