Tottenham Hotspur are gearing up for the departure of captain Cristian Romero, regardless of whether they stay in the Premier League or not.
The Spurs board have made numerous mistakes over the years, especially in the transfer market. They must not repeat it, even if they avoid relegation. They have to recruit well and will also need to find good replacements for departures.
Many Tottenham players have been linked with exits this summer, even if they stay in the Premier League next season. With no European football and back-to-back poor league finishes, Spurs will find it hard to convince these players to stay as well.
Tottenham set asking price for Cristian Romero
One of the players who has been heavily linked with a summer move is Romero. He was also linked last summer, but signed a new contract. However, he will most likely leave the club this time around.
As per Caught Offside, Tottenham are also resigned to the idea of parting ways with their captain this summer. They have even set an asking price of around €60-65 million for him. His contract expires in 2029, and Spurs signed him from Atalanta on loan with an obligation to buy worth €52 million in 2021.
Notably, Romero’s father revealed a ‘bombshell’ release clause in his Tottenham contract. He suggested that it is somewhere between €45-60 million this summer. However, the north London side will likely demand a higher fee than that.

As per Caught Offside, numerous top clubs are monitoring the Argentine defender. Real Madrid are looking to replace Eder Militao and David Alaba, while Manchester United are also looking to strengthen their defense. Atletico Madrid, who were linked with Romero last summer, retain interest in him.
Tottenham and Romero appear set to part ways
It has been a topsy-turvy five years for Romero at Tottenham, and it appears to be coming to an unfortunate end.
Spurs will find it hard to convince him to stay this summer, especially after his digs at the board. The defender will also be keen to play for a club that regularly competes for silverware.
Romero has made 156 appearances for Spurs, which have seen some big performances and also many poor ones. However, he was arguably their best player during the Europa League knockouts last season.
He put in a Player of the Match performance in the final against Manchester United to end the club’s 17-year trophy drought.

The 27-year-old is now out for the season after suffering a knee injury against Sunderland earlier this month. He will likely be able to return in time for Argentina’s FIFA World Cup campaign.
Hence, unless there is a major twist, the Sunderland game could have potentially marked Romero’s final game in a Tottenham shirt.
