Regardless of whether they get relegated or not, Tottenham could be set for a big clearout in the summer.
The North London outfit are battling relegation in the Premier League, and with seven games to go, their future hangs in the balance. They will certainly not have European football next season, a major contrast after winning the UEFA Europa League last season.
Many of their players have been linked with an exit in the summer. While Spurs will look to part ways with some themselves, some players will look for greener pastures, including Cristian Romero.
Romero Sr opens up about son’s Tottenham future
Romero has been linked with a move away from Tottenham since last summer. However, despite interest from Atletico Madrid, he signed a new contract with the north London side, valid until 2029.

Earlier this year, some reports suggested that his contract has a special release clause for clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid worth €60 million.
While he didn’t mention a preferential clause, Romero’s father, Victor Romero, has confirmed the presence of a release clause. In an interview with Cadena 3, he said:
“It’s a bombshell that keeps getting bigger. He has two more years on his contract with Tottenham and a very high release clause. The English club isn’t going to let him go for free; it’s between $50-70m [€43.4-60.6m]. For me, they’ll want to recover what they invested.”
Notably, apart from these top European clubs, Romero has also been linked with a return to his boyhood club, Atletico Belgrano. While it is unlikely, Victor said:
“I hope it’s true; as a Belgrano fan and a father, what more could I want, but I don’t know anything. I don’t know anything, but in football anything can happen.
Today you might be thinking about being close to your family, and tomorrow, they put together a team to win the championship and everything changes. I don’t want to lie.”
However, Football.London has reported that there is no release clause in Romero’s contract, despite Victor’s statement.
Romero appears set for a summer move
The Argentine signing a new contract at Tottenham last year came as a big surprise to most, especially following Ange Postecoglou’s sacking. It would, arguably, be an even bigger shock if he stays at the club beyond this summer.

Romero recently expressed his frustration with Spurs’ situation, despite asserting his willingness to help them avoid relegation. He has also made his stance against the club’s board clear on multiple occasions.
He will turn 28 later this month and is entering the peak of his career. Hence, with interest from some top European clubs like Atletico and Real Madrid, it would be hard for Spurs to convince him to stay.
