In a surprising development, one of Tottenham’s key transfer plans for this summer hinges on Bayern Munich legend Manuel Neuer.
Tottenham, like most clubs, are looking to put some plans in place for the summer transfer window. While their future in the Premier League hangs in the balance, they could still look to set some wheels in motion if they avoid relegation.
One key area that Spurs will most likely need to look at this summer is goalkeeping. Guglielmo Vicario has been linked with an exit, even if they stay in the Premier League. However, Neuer could potentially play a role in a goalkeeping domino effect this summer, involving the north London side.
Neuer could affect Tottenham and Brighton’s transfer plans
The Bayern Munich legend is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time. He also put in a Player of the Match performance last week, as the Bavarians beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the Champions League quarter-finals first leg.
However, Neuer is 40 now, and there is speculation about his future at the club. He retired from the German national team last year and could potentially retire from club football this summer as well. As per TeamTalk, his decision will affect Brighton and Tottenham’s transfer plans.
If Neuer retires, Bayern will look for a replacement and have marked Bart Verbruggen as a potential target. The Dutch goalkeeper has impressed for Brighton since arriving from Anderlecht in 2023. He’s made 99 appearances, keeping 24 clean sheets. He is also excellent on the ball.
However, Tottenham are also interested in signing Verbruggen, especially after Roberto De Zerbi’s appointment.
His contract with Brighton expires in 2028, who are looking to make a big profit on the £16 million they paid for him. If the Dutchman leaves, the Seagulls are looking to make Carl Rushworth, who is on loan at Coventry City, their first-choice goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, Neuer will delay his final decision until the end of the season, especially if Bayern make it to the Champions League final. If he retires, Verbruggen will likely join the Bavarians. If not, Tottenham could potentially make a move for him.
Verbruggen would be a great Vicario replacement for Tottenham
Vicario appears set to join Inter Milan this summer. With Antonin Kinsky failing to impress, Tottenham will need to sign a replacement, especially if they stay in the Premier League. Verbruggen will be a great option if they can sign him this summer.
The Netherlands No. 1 made 27 appearances under De Zerbi at Brighton, keeping seven clean sheets, and understands his playing style.
He is excellent with the ball at his feet, which is a prerequisite for a modern goalkeeper. As per Fotmob, he also has the fourth-highest save percentage in the league this season at 71.1%.

However, if an option between Bayern and Tottenham appears, Verbruggen is likely to choose the former. Even if Spurs stay in the Premier League, they will have no European football. They have also been linked with a move for James Trafford, who could leave Manchester City.
