Speculation surrounding Tottenham Hotspur has dominated the back pages during the ongoing summer transfer window.
Their spending spree has exceeded £230m, which is a sizeable outlay considering how the Lilywhites have conducted business in recent years.
Roberto De Zerbi confirmed that Tottenham are in talks to complete another signing, but the club are also working diligently behind the scenes to finalise outgoings.
Cristian Romero has been locked in talks to sign for Inter Milan and is unlikely to play for Tottenham again.
And now, reports from the Italian media have confirmed that the Argentine defender is close to a move to the Serie A champions.
Cristian Romero edges closer to Tottenham departure
Earlier today, De Zerbi confirmed that Romero asked to leave the club, with Gugliemo Vicario also set to follow him out the door.
Corriere dello Sport now report that Inter and Tottenham are close to reaching an agreement for €40m. There were reports that Barcelona could also enter the race, but it appears that the Serie A giants have stolen the march on the deal.
The report also confirms that Inter and Romero are discussing personal terms, with an agreement believed to be imminent or closer than what was initially reported.
Romero has been a fantastic servant for the club and De Zerbi singled out his attitude for special praise. Tottenham have already replaced him with the signing of Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi, so this deal makes sense for all parties involved.
It wasn’t the fairytale ending everyone had hoped for as Romero didn’t get a proper farewell. But all said and done, he’ll be remembered as one of the club’s best players in the 2020s.
