David Ornstein addresses ‘conflicting reports’ coming out of Tottenham about Sean Dyche

Unsurprisingly, Sean Dyche’s name has been mentioned at Tottenham Hotspur as they battle to avoid Premier League relegation.

Igor Tudor’s future is set to be decided by Monday, with the Croatian currently on compassionate leave after the sad death of his father, Mario.

His previous game in charge of the club was a 3-0 defeat to fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest, a result that put the Lilywhites just a point above the relegation zone.

Earlier this week, there were widespread reports from England that Tottenham are considering Dyche, who has been without a job since his Forest sacking last month.

And now, David Ornstein has had his say on what is quite frankly a dire situation for the club.

Unclear whether Dyche wants Tottenham

Dyche replaced Ange Postecoglou at Forest earlier this season but was sacked in mid-February after a 0-0 draw against 20th-placed Wolves.

However, he won six out of his 18 Premier League games in charge of the club, which is a fantastic record for a team battling to avoid the drop.

Tottenham could press the SOS button and turn to the Englishman, who has saved Burnley and Everton from relegation in his Premier League career so far.

However, Ornstein feels the situation isn’t as straightforward, as potential candidates will be wary of taking a short-term deal until the end of the season.

“An emergency at Spurs and desperate times call for desperate measures,” said Ornstein via Sky Sports.

“And I’m not saying that in a derogatory way towards Sean Dyche. He’s an excellent coach and has proved it with his record in football and in the Premier League.

“You wouldn’t immediately have him down as a candidate to manage Tottenham in terms of style and the clubs he’s managed so far. He’s available and whether he would take it or not is not clear.”

Tudor is still at the club and Tottenham don’t play in the Premier League until the 12th of April, giving them plenty of time to make a managerial change.

Ornstein, however, claims he’s unsure if Dyche would take the job, as the burden of potentially being at the helm if Tottenham go down would be too big to bear.

“There were some conflicting reports about that and what would the terms be?” continued Ornstein.

“Would it be a deal until the end of the season? Would Dyche, or anyone else, be willing to take that? What if there’s relegation?

“What if you keep Tottenham in the Premier League – what sort of contract do you get then? There’s a lot to be worked out there and it’s a dire situation.”

Dyche has been there and done it

Tudor’s reign hasn’t worked out so far, but in recent weeks, Tottenham have committed far too many individual errors, while they have also been ravaged by injuries.

The Croatian isn’t completely absolved of the blame, but the players and the management need to take their fair share of criticism, indicating that it’s been a case of collective failure.

Nevertheless, they still have time to salvage the situation, and who better than the man who has been there and done it a handful of times in his career so far?

Dyche would shore things up at the back for Tottenham and get his players to hit long balls out to the forward, with Dominic Solanke and Randal Kolo Muani capable of thriving in such a set-up.

Keeping it tight defensively and nicking a set-piece goal or two is his blueprint, which wouldn’t require too much in the way of elaborate coaching. And with time running out, Dyche’s potential arrival seems like the last throw of the dice for Tottenham as they fight to avoid the drop.
