Swedish sources reveal exactly when Lucas Bergvall will return from injury for Tottenham

The 2025-26 season hasn’t gone as planned for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall.

The young Swede was named the club’s Player of the Year last season as he played a pivotal role under Ange Postecoglou on their way to winning the UEFA Europa League.

After Thomas Frank’s arrival, Bergvall’s influence waned – much like the rest of the Tottenham squad – as he looked a shadow of his former self and was sometimes even used as a winger.

To make matters worse, the 20-year-old underwent surgery after sustaining an ankle injury in the 2-0 UEFA Champions League triumph against Borussia Dortmund in late January.

Bergvall was expected to miss at least three months of action after his injury setback. However, reports from Sweden suggest he could be back ahead of schedule if things go as planned.

Bergvall no longer wearing protective boot

Considering Tottenham’s current injury woes, it goes without saying that they could do well with Bergvall returning sooner rather than later.

Elsewhere, for the Swedish national team, the need is just as much, if not more. With a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup up for grabs, Sweden take on Ukraine in a semi-final playoff next month, for which Bergvall faces a race against time to prove his fitness for.

Swedish newspaper Fotboll Direkt have some good news on the matter. They claim Bergvall is no longer wearing a protective boot to support his ankle, which is a sign that his recovery is well underway.

If the healing goes as expected, the 20-year-old is expected to return to action within six weeks, which could mean he could feature for Sweden on the 26th of March.

Considering the same timeline, the Premier League clash against Sunderland on 11th April could mark his return for Tottenham, before which he will look to play for his national team and take them one step closer to the World Cup.

Elsewhere, his compatriot, Dejan Kulusevski, hasn’t featured this season and is out for the foreseeable future as he continues to recover from a knee injury he sustained in mid 2025.

How could Bergvall fit in under Igor Tudor?

Tudor prefers to line up with a 3-5-2 formation and Bergvall could really flourish as an advanced midfielder in his set-up.

The Swede has the technique to play multiple roles in the centre of the park due to his ability to evade pressure and take clean touches with either foot, making him an intriguing stylistic fit for the interim boss’ system.

However, the Croatian will have to wait at least a month to see Bergvall in action as he continues to work his way to full fitness.
