At a glance:
- Tottenham’s injury woes deepen
- Solanke and Simons injured vs Wolves
- De Zerbi provides fitness update
We weren’t sure if we’ll ever get to write this, but Tottenham finally secured their first Premier League win of 2026 with a 1-0 win against Wolves.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side finally dramatically broke their domestic drought as Joao Palhinha scored a late goal to spare their blushes.
Tottenham are still in the relegation zone, though. West Ham’s 2-1 win against Everton means the North London side are still two points behind the Hammers with four games to go.
The Italian was able to celebrate a win, but injuries to Dominic Solanke and Xavi Simons left a sour note in what was an otherwise happy evening for the visitors.
Solanke and Simons hobble off vs Wolves
Solanke was substituted with a hamstring injury in the first half as Richarlison came on in his place.
In the second half, Tottenham’s injury woes appeared to scalp another victim. Simons went down holding his knee and was withdrawn minutes later as he left the field on a stretcher.
While De Zerbi feels Solanke’s injury isn’t expected to be serious, he appeared to suggest that he is awaiting details on Simons’ knee problem.
“Solanke has a muscular injury, Xavi has a problem with his knee,” said De Zerbi in his post-match press conference via Football London.
“We will see in the next few days. Solanke, it’s not a big problem, I don’t know how many games we lose him.
“I would like to know more about Xavi, though, because you know, the knee, it’s always different from the muscles.
“He felt pain, but now that I spoke with him, he feels better than at the beginning when he got his injury.”
De Zerbi says Tottenham will stay up
West Ham’s late winner means Tottenham are still in the relegation zone with four games left to go.
However, De Zerbi feels Tottenham have it in them to leapfrog their London rivals.
He added, “I believe we will stay up. If I stay here, it’s because I’m positive. Not because I’m a coach of Tottenham.
“It’s not important if you’re Tottenham on the pitch; the most important thing is the qualities of the players and the human levels of the players.
“It was a surprise to me. When I got to know them. It’s just two points, not 10 points. West Ham are a good team, but so are Tottenham.”
Tottenham travel to Villa Park to take on Aston Villa next week as they continue to fight for their lives in the Premier League. For now, though, this will do.
