The summer of 2026 was one of change at Tottenham as both Timo Werner and Heung-min Son departed the club, along with Ange Postecoglou.
After winning the UEFA Europa League, the North London outfit opted to appoint Thomas Frank as manager, which obviously didn’t work out well.
In terms of outgoings, Son left after captaining the club to their first trophy in 17 years. Werner, meanwhile, returned to Leipzig after his loan deal with the club expired at the end of the season.
Both players made the move to MLS subsequently, with Son joining Los Angeles FC and Werner moving to the San Jose Earthquakes.
Tottenham reunion in America
The two sides went head-to-head in MLS in what turned out to be a goalfest. San Jose secured a 4-1 away win, with Werner getting his first goal for the club.

Son started for Los Angeles but was unable to prevent his side from losing. Ahead of the game, both players were seen chatting with one another, which was also the case at the full-time whistle.
Speaking after the game, Werner claimed he was happy to run into his old friend as a lovely Tottenham reunion put smiles on the faces of the fans.
“We were joking around before the game a little bit and also after the game,” said the German international.
“It was great to see him, he’s one of my good friends from Tottenham.
“I’m happy for him that he’s found a place where he can also enjoy himself and I’m also happy that I can see him later.”
Son’s absence felt at Tottenham
Werner scored just three times and recorded seven assists in 41 appearances for Tottenham. However, he was mostly always available and was used as a super-sub to run at tired legs.

As for Son, his contributions for Tottenham need no reminding. They are still looking for a player of his calibre as they continue to struggle for goals.
If the pair were around today, Roberto De Zerbi could have played around with his squad a little bit more.
Instead, with the lack of wide players at the club currently, the Italian has resorted to putting square pegs in round holes by drafting Richarlison and Randal Kolo Muani out wide.
Nevertheless, it was nice to see two old Tottenham pals catch up in that part of the world. Good luck to Sonny and Timo for the rest of the season!
