Tottenham Hotspur have the chance to make a statement this summer and sign one of Manchester United’s best-ever forwards.
According to a report from The Mirror, United’s hierarchy has grown weary of Barcelona’s refusal to honour their agreed permanent transfer fee for Marcus Rashford, opening the door for Premier League rivals to steal a march.
Rashford enjoyed an incredibly productive loan spell under Hansi Flick at the Nou Camp, registering an impressive 14 goals and 14 assists across 49 appearances. He fully expected to stay in Spain.
Barca splashed out £69 million on Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon, and that could jeopardise Rashford’s desire to join the club permanently. They have attempted to backtrack on their original £24 million permanent agreement with Manchester United, offering another loan or a heavily reduced fee instead.
The Red Devils have firmly rejected Barca’s lowball offers. They are desperate to permanently clear Rashford’s hefty £325,000-a-week wages to fund new manager Michael Carrick’s rebuild.
United are now ready to walk away from the Catalan club and sell to the highest bidder. The report notes that Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle, and Tottenham are all keeping tabs; it explicitly mentions that Rashford has shown initial reluctance toward a move to the Lilywhites.
Fight for Rashford
This is exactly why Tottenham must fight tooth and nail to change his mind. A proven Premier League forward with elite Champions League pedigree for just £24 million is an absolute steal in today’s inflated market. If Roberto De Zerbi can present a highly ambitious, long-term project that guarantees Rashford, dubbed “world-class,” a focal role in the rebuild, they can overcome his hesitation.
United are said to be hesitant to bolster a top-flight rival, but their financial desperation means money talks. If Spurs act swiftly before the upcoming World Cup in North America locks down the market, they can show the player how much they want to sign him.
It’s a low-risk, incredibly high-reward statement signing that would instantly transform Spurs’ attack. He could thrive under De Zerbi and help the north Londoners climb the table.
