As Tottenham Hotspur look to consolidate their defensive unit under Roberto De Zerbi, the transfer rumour mill has linked a new name with a potential move to North London.
Brighton & Hove Albion’s standout centre-back, Jan Paul van Hecke, is officially a target. The club have reportedly failed in an offer to sign the highly rated centre-back.
But who is the Dutchman, and why is he appearing on Spurs’ transfer radar?
Who is Van Hecke?
Born in the Netherlands, Van Hecke began his professional career with NAC Breda before catching the eye of Brighton’s renowned scouting network in 2020.
Following highly successful development loans at Heerenveen and Blackburn Rovers, where he was named Blackburn’s Player of the Season, the robust defender returned to the Amex Stadium ready for the elite tier.
Over the last couple of seasons, he has evolved from a rotational option into a foundational pillar of the Seagulls’ backline, even earning international recognition with the Netherlands national team.
Style of Play: A Perfect De Zerbi Defender
It is easy to see why Tottenham’s recruitment team are heavily enamoured with Van Hecke. Standing at 6ft 2in, he boasts the physical presence required to handle the Premier League’s most physical strikers, but his real value lies in his technical ability.
Van Hecke is an elite ball-playing centre-back. Under the strict tactical demands at Brighton, he has developed a remarkable calmness under pressure, consistently ranking among the league’s top defenders for passing accuracy, progressive passes, and line-breaking carries.
In De Zerbi’s high-octane, front-footed system, defenders must be comfortable playing in a high defensive line and acting as deep-lying playmakers. Van Hecke’s combination of positional intelligence, recovery speed, and fearlessness on the ball makes him an ideal tactical fit.
Where Would He Fit at Spurs?
With Cristian Romero’s future in doubt and uncertainty still taking hold over Micky van de Ven, the Dutchman could become one of the duo’s replacements.
Van Hecke’s durability and versatility across both the right and left centre-back positions would help De Zerbi, along with his experience playing under him at Brighton.
Securing his signature won’t be cheap, given the Seagulls value him at £70m. However, if Spurs want a modern, technically gifted, Premier League-proven defender who is entering his prime, Van Hecke looks like the perfect candidate to take the Lilywhites’ backline to the next level.
