Tottenham Hotspur look set to replace club captain Cristian Romero, and they appear to have found their solution. The Argentine centre-back is heavily tipped for a high-profile exit from North London, leaving a massive, aggressive hole on the right side of Spurs’ central defence.
According to The Athletic, Tottenham may have already zeroed in on the perfect heir to Romero. They have set their sights on Brighton & Hove Albion’s defender, Jan Paul van Hecke.
De Zerbi wants Van Hecke
The report claims that Spurs have made an offer to sign Van Hecke but their proposal has fallen short of Brighton’s valuation. Talks will continue for the Dutch defender and Roberto De Zerbi could play a key role.
The Italian tactician knows Van Hecke inside out from their incredibly successful time together on the South Coast. De Zerbi’s high-octane, risk-heavy system explicitly demands centre-backs who possess elite composure on the ball and the absolute bravery to anchor a hyper-extended defensive line.
From a market perspective, the timing could not be better for the Lilywhites. Van Hecke is rapidly approaching the final 12 months of his contract at the Amex Stadium.
While Brighton are notoriously difficult as rival clubs have found out the hard way over the years, with his contract expiring next year, the Seagulls’ leverage is significantly weakened. Spurs are looking to test Brighton’s resolve early, and Van Hecke represents a genuinely attainable, elite-level solution.
A new-look defence
With Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi set to arrive and join Micky van de Ven in defence, bringing Van Hecke in to lock down the right-sided centre-back berth is an incredibly exciting prospect.
Losing a player of Romero’s calibre is always a bitter pill for supporters to swallow. However, if Tottenham can successfully reunite Van Hecke with De Zerbi, Spurs won’t just mitigate the damage of Romero’s departure, they will have secured a mature, Premier League-proven anchor capable of leading this defence for years to come.
