Tottenham Hotspur extended their winless streak in the Premier League to 15 games after a draw against Brighton at home on April 18.
The north London side are desperate for points as they hope to get out of the relegation zone. They haven’t won a domestic game since December 28 and now have just five games to save themselves.
It appeared that they would finally be able to get their first win of the year against Brighton. After a decent performance, they led 2-1 until stoppage time. However, Georginio Rutter’s goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time broke Tottenham hearts.
Maddison thanks Tottenham fans for their support
Amidst the doom and gloom for Tottenham, they received a big boost with some returning players against Brighton. Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur both started and put in really good performances after returning from their respective injuries.

Another huge returning figure for Spurs was James Maddison, who remained on the bench. The midfielder suffered an ACL injury in pre-season last year and featured in a matchday squad for the first time this season. After the game, he put out a story on Instagram, writing to the fans:
“Honestly, your support yesterday in the stadium for the team was absolutely mental. Although we are still well and truly in this tough moment, the boys will keep fighting. We appreciate our fan base immensely.”
Maddison is loved by the majority of the Tottenham fanbase for his contributions on and off the pitch. Hence, this message will come as a big gesture at a time of need.
Spurs fans have been incredible in their support in recent weeks, despite the result. They will need to continue doing so for the remaining five games if they have to avoid relegation.
Maddison’s return is huge for Tottenham
When Spurs signed Maddison from Leicester City in 2023, it seemed like a perfect fit. The English midfielder has only proven it to be true in his almost three years at the club. He has been immense on and off the pitch for Tottenham.
Maddison has scored 16 goals and provided 21 assists in 75 games for the north London side. He was arguably their best player, alongside Cristian Romero, in the UEFA Europa League knockouts last season. He has also been a leader in the dressing room for the younger players and clearly loves the club as well.

The 29-year-old’s return will be huge for Spurs, especially if he can play as well. Tottenham have been missing any form of creativity this season, with Dejan Kulusevski out injured as well. Meanwhile, Xavi Simons has provided some good moments but is still settling in the Premier League.
The likes of Maddison and Ben Davies also help build the unity between the fanbase and the players, which is desperately needed at this time. Moreover, the former Leicester City man would also be keen to avoid having another relegation in his CV, having already gone down with the Foxes.
