Tottenham receive massive Rodrigo Bentancur injury boost ahead of Brighton clash

Tottenham are fighting to secure their Premier League status as they find themselves 18th in the table.

Roberto De Zerbi has been in charge for just one game, but he already has his work cut out for him as just six matches separate Tottenham from Championship football.

In recent weeks, the Lilywhites have suffered two major injury setbacks as Mohammed Kudus and Cristian Romero are unlikely to feature between now and the rest of the season.

Now, however, it looks like there is some positive news on the injury front ahead of their crucial Premier League clash against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Rodrigo Bentacur back for Tottenham

Tottenham are winless in the Premier League in 2026 and their 1-0 defeat to Sunderland pushed them closer to the Championship than they’ve been.

They struggled particularly in the centre of the park, with Granit Xhaka dominating the Tottenham midfield trio of Archie Gray, Conor Gallagher and Lucas Bergvall.

And now, Sky Sports report that Rodrigo Bentancur could be in contention to face Brighton, having been spotted training with the rest of his teammates at Hotspur Way.

The Uruguayan has missed a lot of football this season owing to a hamstring injury but has been working behind the scenes to return for the run-in, with one eye on the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the summer.

James Maddison was also spotted in training, but the Englishman is unlikely to feature between now and the end of the season as he continued to work his way up to full fitness after tearing his ACL.

Bentancur’s return a big boost for Tottenham

Tottenham have too many similar profiles in midfield, but Bentancur’s passing ability sets him apart from the rest.

He could be the perfect foil for Gray’s energy and endeavor, giving De Zerbi an intriguing option for his 4-2-3-1 formation. Bergvall started as a No.10 against Sunderland and was underwhelming, to say the least.

If Bentancur is fully fit and ready to play the full 90 minutes, don’t be surprised to see De Zerbi throw him straight into the mix, with Gray alongside him as a holding midfielder and Xavi Simons stationed as a No 10.

The game against Brighton is a must-win for De Zerbi as Tottenham are running out of time to save their Premier League status. And with teams around them starting to pick up points consistently, it’s safe to say it’s not looking good for them.

matchday.
