Jamie Carragher predicts whether Tottenham will get relegated after 1-0 Sunderland defeat

Tottenham Hotspur lost 1-0 against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Sunday.

The north London side have now gone 105 days without a Premier League win, with their last win in the competition coming on the 28th of December 2025. They haven’t had a single win in their last 14 league games and have garnered just one point in their last eight.

On Sunday, they put in another poor performance. Nordi Mukiele scored in the 61st minute after an excellent run. His left-footed shot from just outside the box took a deflection from Micky van de Ven as it went past Antonin Kinsky. Spurs failed to create much to restore parity and fell to another defeat.

Jamie Carragher labels Tottenham ‘awful’

Tottenham couldn’t even manage 1 xG against Sunderland in a crucial game after starting three strikers. They created some opportunities, but barely any clear-cut chances in the entire game.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports that Spurs might not even beat bottom-placed Wolves at this point. He said:

“Normally a new manager comes in and you say it’s his first game, that has to go out the window. It had to go out the window for Igor Tudor and it’s the same for Roberto de Zerbi. Because of where they find themselves. I can’t believe it. Tottenham look like they’re going to go down.”

“The other teams have something going for them. One point in 24? You look at fixtures, you think that’s a good game for Tottenham. But they’re awful. Tottenham’s a good game for them. Wolves are bottom of the league. Do you think Tottenham will go there, and win? No chance,” he added.

Notably, both of Tottenham’s relegation rivals picked up points this weekend. While West Ham hammered Wolves 4-0 at home on Friday, Nottingham Forest drew 1-1 against Aston Villa on Sunday.

De Zerbi starts poorly at Tottenham

Not only was the result catastrophic, but the performance failed to give any hope for Tottenham either. De Zerbi has only had 10 days of training, but there was almost no improvement whatsoever in the game. Reports claimed Spurs players were impressed with the Italian’s training methods. However, it didn’t appear so on the pitch.

Spurs managed just 11 attempts, with seven being on target, as compared to Sunderland’s 13 attempts, with two being on target. The hosts managed 1.79 xG, while the visitors had 0.91.

De Zerbi started Conor Gallagher in central midfield, with Lucas Bergvall as the #10, which has already failed multiple times this season. Moreover, he benched Mathys Tel and Xavi Simons to play three strikers up front, which led to barely any chances being created.

With just six games remaining, Tottenham need a miraculous turn of form to avoid relegation. It will likely start with selecting the right lineup and making the right substitutions in games.
