Pape Sarr: Sources from Senegal confirm injury blow for Tottenham man on international duty

Pape Sarr was one of the Tottenham Hotspur players out on international duty over the past week after being called up by the Senegal national team.

The young midfielder was part of the squad that won AFCON earlier this year and with a spot in the Senegal squad up for grabs at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Pape Thiaw called him up for the friendlies against Peru and Gambia.

The reigning AFCON champions won both games to step up their preparations for the tournament in the summer.

However, not everything went in their favour as Sarr missed the win against Gambia with a suspected injury, which has emerged as a cause for concern at Tottenham.

Tottenham’s injury hell strikes again with Sarr

Sarr was on the bench for the 2-0 win against Peru as he came on as a late substitute to see off a comfortable win for his side last week.

He was expected to at least be in the squad for the clash against Gambia but wasn’t in the matchday squad as rumours began to emerge about a potential injury.

And now, Pressafrik, a local Senegal online newspaper based out of Dakar, have confirmed that the 23-year-old sustained a shoulder injury, which kept him out of the squad against Gambia.

No other details have emerged at this stage, which is a worrying sign for Tottenham as they need all their players fit for the business end of the season.

However, another way of looking at it is that if Sarr did indeed suffer a serious injury, Senegal or Tottenham would have addressed the situation, so maybe he isn’t expected to spend any time on the sidelines.

Tottenham can’t afford any more injuries this season

James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski haven’t featured at all this season due to long-term injuries, while the likes of Destiny Udogie, Lucas Bergvall and Mohammed Kudus have all spent time on the sidelines, among others.

With relegation looking like a serious possibility, Tottenham simply can’t afford to have any more injuries as they need every last member of their squad to contribute to avoid dropping down to the Championship.

Additionally, if Sarr is actually injured, the timing couldn’t be worse as he wouldn’t be able to endear himself to new manager Roberto De Zerbi.

The 23-year-old featured regularly under Igor Tudor, having partnered Archie Gray in the centre of the park. De Zerbi will meet the Tottenham squad on Friday as preparations begin for the Premier League clash against Sunderland.

Tottenham fans will keep their eyes peeled and analyse every last minute of the footage to see if they spot Sarr, whose energy and drive in midfield could be invaluable at the business end of the season.

matchday.
