Archie Gray proves he can be Roberto De Zerbi’s midfield lynchpin at Tottenham after latest England U21 display

Archie Gray put in a Player of the Match performance for England U21 on Tuesday, March 31. The midfielder has been a rare silver lining in a terrible season for Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham signed Gray from Leeds United in 2024 for £40 million amidst immense competition. They notably beat Manchester City to his signature, offering him regular playing time in the senior team under Ange Postecoglou.

Since then, Gray has emerged as one of the most dependable characters in this Tottenham squad. He has also translated his club performances to the international level.

Archie Gray shines as England U21 beat Moldova U21 4-1

England U21 sit atop Group D in the UEFA Euro U21 qualifiers after seven games. On Tuesday, March 31, they beat Moldova U21 4-1.

Gray started the game in midfield, which is his favorable position, alongside Jobe Bellingham. With the scores level at 1-1, the Tottenham man scored a brilliant goal from just inside the box into the top corner in the 61st minute. Ethan Nwaneri scored a brace, while Romain Esse scored the fourth goal for the hosts.

However, Gray was deemed the Player of the Match for his overall performance. As per SofaScore, he completed 72/77 passes, including one key pass, completed 3 progressive carries, won 3/4 ground duels, and made three interceptions.

Overall, it was an exceptional performance from the 20-year-old, who got an 8.0 rating on SofaScore. Notably, Tottenham defender Ashley Phillips, who is on loan at Stoke City, also featured against Moldova and got a rating of 6.9.

Gray could be an important player under Roberto De Zerbi

It has been an abysmal season for Spurs, as they sit just one point above the relegation zone with seven games remaining. While most of the squad has faced criticism, Gray has largely been consistent, displaying both ability and personality.

Incidentally, Tottenham’s last Premier League win came on December 28, 2025, as Gray scored in a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace. He has scored twice and provided three assists in 32 games across competitions this season.

Gray has played in all four positions in defense and in multiple positions in midfield in his two seasons at Tottenham. While he received a lot of praise for his versatility last season, he has shone in midfield this season.

Now, Spurs have appointed Roberto De Zerbi, under whom, midfield is a crucial position. He likes his teams to bait the opposition press and pass through midfield. Considering his form, Gray could be crucial for this playing style.

While he is not a pass-first midfielder, the former Leeds man has shown immense versatility and mentality in his young career. Moreover, he doesn’t shy away from asking for the ball during tough phases in a game or a season.

Gray is also the leading contender for Tottenham’s Player of the Season award. If he can help them avoid relegation in these last seven games, he would have already reached at least a cult figure status at the club in just two years.
