Tottenham told to pay £20m to sign Premier League loanee who nearly joined Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur are set for a summer transfer window that could define the course of their future.

Before that, there is a small matter of confirming their Premier League status, with Igor Tudor’s side currently perilously close to the relegation zone.

They are winless in the Premier League in 2026 and are just a point above 18th-placed West Ham United, with Nottingham Forest climbing above them last week after their 3-0 win.

That hasn’t stopped Tottenham from preparing for summer reinforcements, though, with Lutsharel Geertruida emerging on their radar if reports from England are to be believed.

And now, the Lilywhites have been told exactly how much it would take to sign the Dutch international at the end of the season.

Lutsharel Geertruida on Tottenham’s radar

Geertruida is currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, having failed to secure a first-team spot in Germany.

Regis Le Bris’ side don’t have the option to sign him permanently at the end of the season, due to which he is set to return to Leipzig in the summer.

Caught Offside report that Tottenham are keeping tabs on the Dutch international, who was close to joining Liverpool in the January transfer window.

However, despite the deal being close to completion, it fell through as the Reds couldn’t agree on a compensation package with Sunderland.

The report also mentions interest from Aston Villa, Everton and Crystal Palace, while Liverpool could rekindle their pursuit after nearly signing him two months ago.

RB Leipzig are believed to be open to a sale, provided their valuation of £20m is met.

Geertruida an intriguing squad option

Capable of playing at right-back, central midfielder and at the heart of the backline, Geertruida’s versatility makes him an invaluable squad asset.

He has featured 25 times in the Premier League for Sunderland this season – predominantly as a right-back – which is a sign that he is more than capable of holding his own in the competition.

Tottenham already have Pedro Porro and Djed Spence in that position, but it remains to be seen if the former sticks on in the summer, especially if they drop down to the Championship.

Geertruida is also a Dutch international and is set to be part of Ronald Koeman’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while his leadership qualities are well-documented, having captained Feyenoord when Arne Slot was in charge of the club.

The £20m asking price isn’t outrageous for a player who covers multiple positions. That said, Tottenham could have other priorities this summer, so it remains to be seen if they splurge on utility options when they have other glaring holes in the squad.
