‘Control’ – Roberto De Zerbi explains why Tottenham changed formation vs Coventry

Tottenham training return: Roberto De Zerbi celebrating on the touchline in a Tottenham context

Tottenham finally got their first win of the Premier League season as they beat Coventry City 3-1 at home.

Goals from James Maddison, Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies set Roberto De Zerbi’s side on their way to all three points as Jack Rudoni’s second-half strike proved to be a mere consolation for the away side.

The game had a lot of talking points as Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski returned to the matchday squad, while Tottenham also lined up with three at the back while in possession, with Tosin Adarabioyo making his first Premier League start for the club.

And after the game, De Zerbi admitted that he changed shape to ensure Tottenham don’t get caught out on the break by Coventry.

Tottenham wanted to prevent Coventry’s counter-attacking threat

“We played three at the back [in possession],” said De Zerbi after the game via Football London.

“I want to explain why: because of the injured players in the midfield, Conor Gallagher came back two days ago, and at the beginning of the week the medical staff told me he might not be available to play.

“Bergvall was injured, Mateus Fernandes worked just the last two days because of his [newborn] son, and I thought three at the back was the best solution to defend the counter-attack, to have more control of the game, and for that I’m happy because we didn’t concede a counter-attack.”

It wasn’t Tottenham’s finest performance of the season so far, but they won’t mind it one bit as they have finally won a game of football in the Premier League to climb out of the relegation zone.
