‘Important’ – De Zerbi admits Tottenham need to protect injury-prone midfielder

Tottenham will hope their season finally has liftoff when they take on Liverpool later today in a second-round Carabao Cup clash.

The Lilywhites haven’t won a Premier League game so far, so the domestic cups could prove to be a welcome distraction.

Roberto De Zerbi confirmed in his press conference that he will make wholesale changes to his squad.

A few key players are set to return from injury, but the Italian admits James Maddison is still not fit enough to play 90 minutes.

James Maddison still not fully fit for Tottenham

“He’s another important player for us,” said the Italian when asked if Tottenham need to be cautious with Maddison.

“He has to stay in good physical condition. In the last press conference, we spoke about the change, the intensity of the Premier League and he needs to work harder like he’s done.

“And then he’s a different player for us. The quality of James is different than other players.

“Kudus can play number 10, more offensive. Marmoush can play as a number 10. Maybe we have to force it, no?

“But to force the idea, to force the characteristics of the players in the first 11.”

Maddison is the best No. 10 Tottenham have in their squad, so they are better off waiting for him to return to full fitness as opposed to risking him for short-term gains.
