At a glance:
- Micky van de Ven could now stay at Tottenham
- Dutchman relishing life under De Zerbi
- Van de Ven under contract until 2029
Micky van de Ven was initially linked with a Tottenham departure in the upcoming summer transfer window.
However, according to GiveMeSport, Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival appears to have led to a rethink, at the very least.
In Cristian Romero’s absence, the Dutchman has captained Tottenham in recent weeks, marshalling the backline alongside Kevin Danso.
And as the North London outfit edge closer to avoiding relegation, the reliable Ben Jacobs has provided an update on Van de Ven’s future.
Van de Ven open to Tottenham stay
Earlier this year, we reported that Van de Ven was unwilling to commit his future to Tottenham, with his current deal set to expire in 2029.
At the time, the Lilywhites were in a spot of bother under Igor Tudor and couldn’t buy themselves a win.
Now, things look a lot better, especially after De Zerbi’s arrival. The Italian has breathed new life into Tottenham and has steered them out of the relegation zone with just two Premier League games left to play.
Jacobs believes Van de Ven is relishing the prospect of working with De Zerbi and is now likely to stay, especially with Tottenham set to part with captain Cristian Romero in the summer.
“Micky van der Ven is really enjoying playing under Roberto De Zerbi.
“If Tottenham do secure their place in the Premier League, despite growing interest, I think there’s a fair chance that he engages over talks to sign a new deal, because obviously Tottenham in the Premier League don’t want a scenario where they lose both van der Ven and Romero.”
Van de Ven’s stay could save Tottenham a lot of money
Romero has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid and is likely to leave Tottenham.
In the same column, Jacobs spoke about the Argentine’s future, confirming that a summer departure is well on the cards.
“Cristian Romero, I’m still told will leave either way, or there’s a high likelihood of it anyway, and that makes it a bit more clear-cut that Tottenham need to agree on something there if it suits all parties, and then go out and get a starting defence.
His departure will create a big hole in the back in terms of leadership and defensive quality.
If Van de Ven ends up staying, he can lead the backline and will also likely get the captain’s armband.
Tottenham have a verbal agreement to sign Marcos Senesi, who will join on a free transfer if they secure Premier League safety.
And with Luka Vuskovic also set to return from his loan spell, De Zerbi will have at least four solid, central defenders to pick from if you include Danso.
Van de Ven staying could save Tottenham a lot of money, allowing them to address other weaknesses in the squad. And fingers crossed it happens.
