Despite their position in the Premier League table, Tottenham are planning for the summer transfer window under Roberto De Zerbi.
The Italian signed a five-year deal at the club and will look to oversee a new era, with a handful of players expected to leave.
De Zerbi’s contract doesn’t have a relegation clause, so he will be at the club even if they get relegated next season.
Obviously, future incomings will depend on whether or not Tottenham secure their Premier League status.
But that hasn’t stopped them from putting plans in place. And now, David Ornstein has provided a big update on Marcos Senesi’s future, who has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham.
Tottenham leading the race for Senesi
Senesi has been one of the most reliable defenders in the Premier League under Andoni Iraola. However, much like the Bournemouth manager, he is set to leave at the end of the season as his contract runs out then.
Earlier this year, we covered Tottenham’s interest in Senesi, with the Lilywhites on the lookout for at least one central defender this summer.
And now, Ornstein reports that the North London outfit are leading the race to secure Senesi’s signature, although the deal hinges on whether or not they secure Premier League safety.
Senesi hasn’t chosen Tottenham outright yet amid interest from a handful of other clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea.
However, De Zerbi’s side have stepped up their pursuit of the defender as they look to plan for the future.
Senesi a dream signing for De Zerbi
Cristian Romero has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid and Micky van de Ven hasn’t committed his future to Tottenham as their battle to avoid the drop continues.
If both players end up leaving, a massive hole opens up at the back, while Tottenham would also be losing two senior players and leaders from their dressing room.
Senesi would address both those issues. The Argentine would also solve some of Tottenham’s problems in terms of their build-up play, making him the perfect candidate to lead the backline under De Zerbi.
Additionally, he wouldn’t command a transfer fee, which would allow the club to splash the cash on other areas of the pitch.
Senesi is undoubtedly a top-class defender and if he does decide to join the club, a large part of it will be down to De Zerbi.
Tottenham have also been linked with a move for Andy Robertson, who is set to leave Liverpool as a free agent in the summer.
And the arrival of two experienced defenders could breathe new life into a team that has desperately lacked quality and experience in key moments this season.
Make it happen, Vinai Venkatesham and Johan Lange!
