‘Waiting’ – Micky van de Ven decides next club as Tottenham contract talks hit standstill

Micky van de Ven has been a central figure for Tottenham Hotspur since joining the club under Ange Postecoglou in 2024.

The Dutch international took the Premier League by storm during his first season at the club, establishing himself as a firm favourite as the club’s long wait for a trophy ended with UEFA Europa League glory.

Despite his recent form, Postecoglou feels Van de Ven can be as good as he wants to be as he tipped him to play a starring role for the Netherlands at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, his future is up in the air, especially with the club currently battling relegation.

Van de Ven has thus far shown no intention to sign a new deal, although he’s tied down at Tottenham until 2029.

And now, reports from Spain have made a rather outrageous claim about his future.

Van de Ven ‘waiting’ for Real Madrid

Van de Ven has quickly become one of Tottenham’s most important players and Igor Tudor needs him at his best to secure the club’s Premier League status.

However, speculation surrounding his future continues to dominate the back pages.

In February, reports from England claimed Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid are keeping tabs on Van de Ven’s situation, which seemed quite believable at the time considering Tottenham’s situation.

And now, Spanish publication Defensa Central have cranked it up a notch. They claim Van de Ven has decided to join Real Madrid and is currently ‘waiting for a call’ from the Spanish giants, who are on the lookout for a centre half.

While Real Madrid’s interest has also been reported in England, the fact that Defensa Central are making such a definitive claim will be seen as a cause for concern by the Tottenham faithful.

However, over the years, a handful of outrageous transfer stories have been published by the Spanish media, so it remains to be seen how the situation develops.

The report also mentions that Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck is Real Madrid’s unanimous choice to bolster their ranks in defence, indicating that Van de Ven could be their plan B.

Tottenham set for big defensive change

Avoiding relegation is the name of the game for Tottenham as they continue to register their first Premier League win of 2026.

However, regardless of their top-flight status, they could be set for a massive change to their rearguard in the summer.

Van de Ven’s situation is well documented, while there are growing doubts over Cristian Romero’s Tottenham future amid interest from Atletico Madrid.

In terms of potential incoming, Marcos Senesi has keen admirers at N17 as he enters the last months of his current Bournemouth contract.

There are a lot of moving parts in play at the moment, making it impossible to predict how things will pan.

That said, it wouldn’t come as a big surprise to see both Romero and Van de Ven move on at the end of the season as Tottenham are currently in a state of turmoil.

matchday.
