- Verdict on potential Senesi signing
Sebastian Bassong is well known among the Tottenham community, having spent two-and-a-half seasons at White Hart Lane after joining from Newcastle United in 2009.
The Cameroonian was a household name in the Premier League from the mid 200s to the early 2010s, having also represented the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Norwich City and Watford.
He didn’t win a trophy at Tottenham during his spell at the club but made 45 Premier League appearances, scoring two goals.
The North London outfit’s current state, however, isn’t ideal as they continue to battle the odds to avoid relegation.
That said, Bassong feels the arrival of Roberto De Zerbi has been a breath of fresh air, which could positively impact the futures of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.
Bassong tips Romero and Van de Ven to stay at Tottenham
Romero has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, while Van de Ven has yet to commit his future to Tottenham.
If both players move on, De Zerbi will have big shoes to fill at the back as he’d lose two senior pros who are part of his leadership group.
Speaking exclusively to Read Tottenham via BetGoodwin, Bassong feels the Tottenham pair could remain at the club next season, citing De Zerbi as the main reason who could cause a change of heart.
“I can see Cuti Romeo and De Zerbi getting on really well as they share the same passion for the game and personality-wise, I believe they match.
“So if they can speak a lot, I believe there can be good conversations for De Zerbi to present the plan for Spurs for next season in the Premier League.
“So, although it had seemed that he and van de Ven could move on, De Zerbi could convince them to stay with this plan for Spurs for next season to start over and push Spurs higher in the table and to compete for trophies.”
Earlier today, we reported that Van de Ven could stay at Tottenham as he’s relishing the prospect of working with De Zerbi, so Bassong might be on to something with his comments.
Romero, meanwhile, is likely to leave and may have already played his last game for the club after suffering an MCL injury in the 1-0 defeat to Sunderland last month.
Bassong on Marcos Senesi’s impending arrival
Despite their position in the league table, the Lilywhites have already put transfer plans in place.
Marcos Senesi has agreed a deal in principle with Tottenham, although the deal hinges on whether or not they avoid relegation.
And Bassong admits a player like Senesi – who has impressed at Bournemouth – could be a valuable addition to De Zerbi’s squad.
“This can be a good signing for Spurs. A talented player, one who can work well for Spurs, which can help them progress in the Premier League to compete for trophies and compete higher in the Premier League.
“Spurs need more quality players, as given the injury record, they need a deeper squad of quality players, so yes, he can be a good signing, should it happen.”
The Argentine is now a household name in the Premier League and has been an indispensable asset for the Cherries since joining the club in 2022.
If Tottenham secure their Premier League status, he will sign for the club on a free transfer.
And if Bassong’s prediction involving Romero and Van de Ven comes true, De Zerbi won’t have to worry about his backline as they’d have four solid options at least, if Luka Vuskovic is thrown into the equation.
