At a glance:
- Tim Sherwood says Tottenham injury woes may be self-inflicted
- Medical staff need to take accountability
- Tottenham worst injury-hit club in PL history
Tottenham’s injury list claimed another victim today as Xavi Simons is set to miss the rest of the season due to an ACL injury.
The Dutch international went down off the ball vs Wolves and tried to shake it off moments later. However, he wasn’t able to continue and was stretchered off the pitch.
The likes of James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert and Mohammed Kudus, among others, have all experienced long-term injuries this season.
And Tim Sherwood feels all of it isn’t just down to bad luck.
Sherwood blames Tottenham for injury hell
Earlier today, we wrote on Read Tottenham that the club’s medical staff need to take more accountability in the wake of recent injuries.
And Sherwood appears to be suggesting the same as he went on an astonishing rant on his former club.
“Injuries have derailed Tottenham all season, and it can’t be bad luck,” said Sherwood on Sky Sports.
“They need to review and [have] a good look at what’s happening to their players because we can all get injured from contact, but a lot of these injuries are not contact.
“They are twists and soft tissue injuries. And ultimately, it looks like they might have to pay the price for it, the ultimate price, which is relegation.
“If you’re a manager, you’re going in, your players – some of your best players – keep getting injured and you can’t get them back to fitness.
“Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison, it’s been a hell of a long time since they’ve been injured. So they’re going to need a good look at that in the summer.”
Sherwood is bang on the money
It goes without saying that injuries are unavoidable in professional sport.
However, over the past two seasons, the number of injuries the Lilywhites have had to endure is staggering, to say the least.
According to the numbers, Tottenham are the most injury-hit club in Premier League history.
In recent weeks, their woes have eased. However, Dominic Solanke, Guglielmo Vicario, Kulusevski, Kudus, Odobert and Simons are all missing currently, which is at least five guaranteed starters.
Tottenham need to have a look at their medical department as such happenings can’t just be a mere coincidence.
It would be foolish to blame all their problems on the medical department. That said, if something has gone horribly wrong, they need to shoulder half the blame at least.
All in all, they are just four games away from relegation and the situation isn’t getting any easier for Roberto De Zerbi…
