Tottenham are the worst injury hit club in Premier League history and the numbers prove it

The only thing consistent with Tottenham in the last two years has been their injury crisis, which is about to break records this season.

Tottenham suffered a major injury crisis last season. They were without the likes of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Destiny Udogie, and Guglielmo Vicario, among others, for multiple games.

This, combined with a poor 2024 summer transfer window, meant they had to prioritize one competition. They won the Europa League, but finished 17th in the Premier League.

Spurs have faced a similar, if not bigger, injury crisis this season. Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison have not featured at all, while the likes of Dominic Solanke, Mohamed Kudus, and Rodrigo Bentancur have all been out for weeks.

Tottenham’s injury crisis set to break Premier League record

There are multiple ways to measure a club’s injuries, such as games missed, the number of injuries, and players out injured, among others. However, based on the number of days missed by a club’s players in a single season, Tottenham are on their way to breaking the Premier League record.

Chelsea players missed 216 days due to injuries in the 2022-23 season in the Premier League. Spurs players have already missed 213 days.

Kulusevski and Maddison are expected to be out for a few more weeks, while Kudus and Wilson Odobert are out for the season. Rodrigo Bentancur and Ben Davies are also a few weeks away from recovery. Hence, Tottenham will comfortably break the Blues’ record.

The Blues finished 12th in the Premier League in the 2022-23 season. Tottenham, however, are struggling at 17th, one point above the relegation zone, with seven games remaining. Roberto De Zerbi faces a big task of trying to keep them in the English top-flight next season with limited resources.

According to a January 21 report by BBC Sport, Spurs players had individually missed 625 days this season due to 19 injuries. Since then, Odobert, Pedro Porro, Kevin Danso, Lucas Bergvall, etc., have suffered more injuries, increasing that stat exponentially.

Tottenham board’s inaction could cost them significantly

Spurs sold Brennan Johnson on January 2, and Mohammed Kudus got injured two days later. They were also missing a few other players and were linked with multiple others. However, the club’s hierarchy decided to sign only Conor Gallagher and Souza.

Tottenham were linked with Ademola Lookman, who joined Atletico Madrid, while Oscar Bobb and Rayan were also of interest before moving to Fulham and Bournemouth, respectively.

However, Sporting Director Johan Lange stated that they didn’t want to panic in the January transfer market.

It was also revealed that Spurs tried to sign Antoine Semenyo, who joined Manchester City. However, after that failed, they didn’t make any attempt for another attacker despite being short in that area.

Three months later, they stare at the possibility of relegation. Saving a few pounds in January could cost them a loss of millions and lead to the biggest dent in the club’s Premier League history.
