At a glance:
- Tottenham have ‘verbal agreement’ with Andy Robertson
- It is subject to their Premier League status
- Robertson has other options for a summer move
Tottenham Hotspur are hanging in the balance at the moment, as they hope to battle out of the Premier League relegation zone this season.
With five games remaining, Spurs are two points behind 17th-placed West Ham and five behind 16th-placed Nottingham Forest. The north London side hasn’t won a Premier League game since December 28. Hence, they appear likely to go down.
A lot of Tottenham’s transfer plans are also dependent on their ability to retain their Premier League status. If they get relegated, they will certainly find it hard to convince their targets.
Andy Robertson has other options
Earlier this month, David Ornstein confirmed that Tottenham have reached a ‘verbal agreement’ with Robertson for a summer move.
The Scottish left-back is set to leave Liverpool as a free agent this summer. However, a potential move to Spurs will only happen if they stay in the Premier League.
Amidst this, former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin has revealed that Robertson would have other options lined up in Scotland and Spain just in case. He said that the left-back could potentially move to Celtic and added (h/t Liverpool.com):
“It’s a big step down [the Championship], but not in terms of being too posh to play that low, but the glory that he’s had so many times, that’s a big call.”
“There are very, very few players of that ilk and that standard that, given the opposite, and the fact that we’ve heard that there’s a possibility of staying in the top level in Spain, or staying in top level in Scotland, or staying in the top level somewhere else, it’s such a temptation,” he added.

Nevin added that Robertson could potentially still choose Tottenham if they go down. However, it appears highly unlikely.
Would Robertson be a good fit for Tottenham?
Fans and pundits have accused Spurs of lacking leadership in the dressing room this season. After the departures of Son Heung-min and Ange Postecoglou last summer, they have been in serious disarray. Hence, in terms of leadership and experience, Robertson could be a good signing for them.
However, he is 32 now, and Liverpool are allowing him to leave for a reason. Tottenham should be looking to bring in players in their primes or at least the ones who could make a proper impact. With Destiny Udogie’s injury issues and Souza’s age (19), Spurs need a proper left-back signing.
Robertson has made 375 appearances for Liverpool and won almost every trophy possible. However, will he be able to play regularly at the highest level if Udogie gets injured again?
Moreover, Roberto De Zerbi’s system requires highly technical and athletic players, which, at 32, the Scotsman is arguably not anymore.

Hence, Robertson’s signing might end up like the ones of Joao Palhinha and Conor Gallagher at Tottenham, i.e, disappointing.
