At a glance:
- Xavi Simons linked with Tottenham exit
- Barcelona looking to sign the Dutchman
- Simons was part of La Masia academy
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Xavi Simons has been linked with a move away after just one year in north London, with multiple clubs interested.
The north London side are currently in a relegation battle and are favorites to go down. If they get relegated, Tottenham will likely see a major exodus of their big-name stars in the summer.
Some players like Cristian Romero and Guglielmo Vicario have been linked with moves away, even if they stay in the Premier League. Regardless, they are set for a big summer transfer window.
Barcelona plotting Xavi Simons reunion
The north London side signed Simons from RB Leipzig for £52 million last summer after their failed move for Eberechi Eze. He came with a big reputation, but has struggled to justify it due to multiple reasons.
Now, with just five games remaining, Simons could be heading out of the club. Fotospor have reported that Barcelona and Fenerbahce are looking to sign the midfielder this summer. He will also be open to leaving Spurs if they get relegated.
Simons was in Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, but he then joined Paris Saint-Germain’s academy in 2019. He has played senior games for PSG, PSV Eindhoven, and Leipzig and has gained immense experience at just 23.

However, Roberto De Zerbi might not be keen to sell Simons this summer. After the midfielder scored and assisted in Tottenham’s 2-2 draw against Brighton, the Italian head coach said (h/t GOAL):
“He’s lucky to work with me – not because I’m good, because I was number 10.
“What he thinks now, I thought 20 years ago. So, we have a special connection. I have a special connection with all number 10s I work with.”
Simons’ contract with Spurs expires in 2030.
Tottenham must keep Simons
It appears to be dependent on their Premier League status, but Tottenham must try their best to keep Simons. While he has struggled for consistency, the attacking midfielder has shown glimpses of how good he can be. He has recorded five goals and six assists in 40 games for them.
Moreover, Simons could thrive under an attacking manager like De Zerbi. While Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor failed to utilize him properly, the Italian is known to give his attacking players confidence and impetus. He also already praised the Dutchman in his few interviews and demanded more goal contributions.

Meanwhile, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski’s futures will also be under speculation after returning from their long-term injuries.
Hence, Tottenham must look to keep their only other creative player in the squad. For that to happen, Simons must also start their remaining five games this season to help them avoid relegation.
