Liverpool defender Andy Robertson was close to a move to Tottenham Hotspur in January, but the deal didn’t materialise.
At the time, Thomas Frank was still the coach and the Dane was keen to add more experience to his squad.
Additionally, with Robertson’s contract at Liverpool running out at the end of the season, the North London outfit were keen on a cut-price January move to add more depth to their injury-ravaged squad.
Tottenham eventually snapped up Souza before the transfer deadline, but now, the experienced Scotsman has finally shed light on why he didn’t move to the club midway through the season.
Robertson decided to honour Liverpool contract
Milos Kerkez has been Liverpool’s first-choice left-back since the start of the 2025-26 season, due to which Robertson has struggled for regular starts.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup edging closer, a move to Tottenham would have given him the opportunities to get regular game time under his belt before heading to North America.
However, Robertson admitted that he eventually decided to remain at the club and honour his contract despite holding talks with Tottenham.
“There was obviously interest there,” Robertson said via ESPN. “There were discussions had with both sets of clubs. But the decision was that I wanted to stay. We stayed at Liverpool and that was the decision made.”
“I was never not committed. I’ve been committed to Liverpool for the last eight and a half or nine years now and I’ll be committed until I’m no longer needed.
“That’s always been my mindset. This club has given me everything and I’ve given this club everything. It’s been a fantastic relationship, so hopefully that continues and obviously January happened, but it is now gone.”
Tottenham have moved on from Robertson
Destiny Udogie is currently injured, but when fit, he is well and truly Tottenham’s first-choice left back. And now, with Souza added to the squad to provide cover and competition, they are well stocked in that department.
After the January transfer window slammed shut, it was revealed that Tottenham are no longer in the running for Robertson, with other English clubs such as Aston Villa now looking to snap him up in the summer.

Additionally, with the club locked in a relegation dog fight, Robertson himself will have second thoughts about joining the club, so the failed transfer ultimately worked out well for everyone involved.
Granted, he would add a wealth of experience to a squad that currently lacks leadership and direction.
However, Tottenham need to build for the future and Robertson is approaching the twilight of his career, so it could be argued that the move didn’t make too much sense in the first place.
