Speculation surrounding Cristian Romero’s Tottenham future has dominated the back pages during the summer transfer window.
And now, the situation has finally been resolved after interest from Inter Milan, Barcelona, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid.
We reported on Read Tottenham yesterday that Romero will join Atletico Madrid after the LaLiga giants made him their priority target.
And now, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Argentine is set to travel to Madrid for his medical imminently.
Cristian Romero’s Tottenham departure almost confirmed
The Italian wrote on X: “Cuti Romero, set to travel to Madrid for Atlético Madrid move with €40m package also including a sell-on clause for Tottenham.
“Told Spurs will get 15% of any future sale. Barcelona decided against the move with Hansi Flick.”
Romero last featured for Tottenham in the 2-1 defeat to Sunderland when he picked up an MCL injury and missed the rest of the campaign.
The 2025-26 season was a difficult one for the Argentine and Spurs as a whole. But Romero always wore his heart on his sleeve and fought for the badge, while his performances during the UEFA Europa League winning run will never be forgotten.
We wish it could have ended on better terms, but good luck in Italy, Cuti.
