‘Names don’t matter’ – De Zerbi sends Tottenham squad message

Roberto De Zerbi has told Tottenham Hotspur’s players that reputation will not influence his team selection during pre-season.

The Spurs head coach will give every member of his squad an opportunity to prove they deserve a place in his plans for the 2026/27 campaign.

“Everyone has the chance to show me if they are serious and good enough to play in this big club,” De Zerbi said.

“The name and surname don’t matter at all when the ball is on the pitch.”

His comments arrive before Tottenham begin their pre-season schedule against MK Dons at Hotspur Way on Wednesday. The behind-closed-doors fixture will provide the first indication of which players have caught De Zerbi’s attention.

De Zerbi’s stance creates an opportunity for academy players and senior squad members whose futures remain uncertain.

Mikey Moore and Jamie Donley have both trained with the first team. Moore has returned following an impressive loan spell at Rangers, while Donley has reportedly made a positive early impression on the head coach.

Tottenham have spent heavily on new players, but De Zerbi’s message suggests they will not receive automatic starting places because of their transfer fees.

The same principle applies to established members of the squad. Several players could leave before the window closes as Tottenham attempt to reduce the size of their senior group.

Pre-season performances will now influence those decisions. De Zerbi has made clear that status and reputation will count for little once the matches begin.
