Jan Paul van Hecke has admitted he is proud of Tottenham Hotspur’s £52m move for him, but insists the transfer will not change his focus before the Netherlands face Sweden at the World Cup.
The 26-year-old completed his switch from Brighton & Hove Albion this week and is now preparing to reunite with Roberto De Zerbi in north London once his international commitments are finished.
Van Hecke worked under De Zerbi at Brighton and arrives as part of Tottenham’s defensive rebuild, following the additions of Andrew Robertson and Marcos Senesi.
Van Hecke Keeps Tottenham Move In Perspective
Speaking after the deal, Van Hecke said he was proud of the fee and the opportunity, but stressed that he would stay grounded, according to a fresh update from FotMob on Van Hecke’s Tottenham transfer comments.
The defender said he could not pretend the move meant nothing, calling Tottenham one of the most important clubs in the UK and a major step for his future.
For Spurs supporters, the timing matters. De Zerbi has moved quickly to reshape a back line that needed more composure, aggression and Premier League certainty. Van Hecke’s duel-winning record at Brighton makes him an obvious fit.
His immediate priority remains the Netherlands, but the message to Tottenham is clear enough: the fee brings pride, not distraction.
