At a glance:
- Tottenham is interested in Leon Goretzka
- He will be a free agent this summer
- Goretzka has said yes to AC Milan
Tottenham Hotspur are looking at a major squad overhaul this summer after an abysmal 2025-26 campaign.
With just four games remaining, Spurs are 18th in the Premier League standings, two points behind West Ham. They finally got their first domestic win of 2026 at Wolves in their last game. However, they still need at least two more to stay safe.
Regardless of whether they stay in the Premier League ot not, Tottenham need a major rebuild. One of the key areas they need to strengthen is their midfield.
Leon Goretzka says yes to AC Milan
Spurs were interested in Leon Goretzka in the winter transfer window, but a deal didn’t go through. The German midfielder is now set to leave Bayern Munich at the expiration of his contract this summer. Hence, he would be available as a free agent.
According to GiveMeSport, Tottenham retain interest in Goretzka, while Manchester United and Arsenal are also monitoring his situation.
However, he has already agreed on a summer move to AC Milan. He wants his move finalized before the FIFA World Cup, and the Italian giants pushed hard for his signature.
Goretzka is known for his tackling and strength in midfield. He was also linked with an exit from Bayern in the past, but turned his situation around. His former teammate, Sami Khedira, said about him last year (h/t X/@iMiaSanMia):
“Outstanding. It shows strength, maturity, but also extreme mentality and clarity of mind. Publicly, he completely kept his mouth shut.
“Internally, from what we hear, he worked like a madman, and he’s highly respected within the team. He stayed calm and fully convinced of his own qualities. He’s a machine, huge respect for Leon.”

The 31-year-old joined Bayern from Schalke in 2018. He has made 308 appearances for them, scoring 49 goals and providing 52 assists.
Tottenham don’t need Goretzka
Spurs need a major rebuild in midfield, but not just any profile. They already have multiple carry-first midfielders, who aren’t specialists at one skill.
Moreover, Tottenham are looking to sign Joao Palhinha permanently from Bayern. Hence, they don’t need to add Goretzka to the mix.
Tottenham need highly technical midfielders, who can pick out a pass, like Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson, or Angelo Stiller.
While Goretzka is a good player, he doesn’t possess any of these skills. Partnering him with the likes of Palhinha or Conor Gallagher is highly unsuited to Roberto De Zerbi’s playing style.
Moreover, he is 31 now, and Spurs need players in their prime now to help them restore some balance after a poor season.
The likes of Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr are also expected to leave. Regardless, any potential incoming will also depend on the north London side’s Premier League status for next season.
