- Eriksen is also in a relegation battle with Wolfsburg
Tottenham Hotspur are just five games away from a potential relegation for the first time in Premier League history.
Spurs were in the UEFA Champions League final just seven years ago. With stars like Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, and Son Heung-min, they appeared destined for greatness.
However, due to the board’s poor decisions, they are now staring at relegation.
With five games remaining, they are well and truly in the thick of things. However, Eriksen believes and hopes they will avoid the drop this season.
Christian Eriksen opens up on Tottenham’s relegation battle
Spurs have won just seven of their 33 Premier League games this season. Fair to say, it has been a painful campaign for anyone associated with the club, including former players.
In a recent interview, Eriksen opened up about Tottenham’s struggles and said (h/t Flashscore):
“It hurts to watch from the outside. It’s annoying. I hope they make it because a club like Tottenham has to play in the Premier League.
“That’s for sure. It will be exciting to see if they can do it. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping they do.
“They’re too good to go out, but that’s what you say about almost all teams that go out. But player by player, they’re too good to get relegated.”

Eriksen was a key part of the Spurs squad that challenged for trophies under Mauricio Pochettino. He contributed 69 goals and 88 assists in 305 games for them.
The 34-year-old, however, is also battling relegation with Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. He joined the German side last September and they are 17th, two points below safety, with four games remaining.
Tottenham have missed an Eriksen-type player this season
As is the norm with the incompetent Tottenham board, it took them ages to replace Eriksen. The Danish attacking midfielder left in January 2020 to join Inter Milan. Only after they signed James Maddison in 2023 did it feel like they had finally replaced him.
However, this season, Spurs have been without Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski due to their respective injuries.
This has been a huge blow for them, as they have not only missed the duo’s creativity but also their leadership.
They always take responsibility on the pitch during tough times, which Spurs have missed massively. They have scored just 42 goals in 33 league games.

Tottenham did sign Xavi Simons last summer, but he has struggled to make a big impact as he settles in the Premier League.
He wasn’t helped by poor management from Thomas Frank. However, after a good performance against Brighton, Simons will hope to get more consistent playing time under Roberto De Zerbi.
