After signing a five-year deal, Roberto De Zerbi will look to shape a new era at Tottenham Hotspur.
Despite winning the UEFA Europa League last season, the club have lacked direction and a long-term manager since Mauricio Pochettino’s departure in 2019.
And the Italian’s arrival could be exactly what they need to breathe new life into the club as he is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in world football.
Plans are being put in place to bolster the squad in the summer transfer window, although the primary target is to pick up points to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
Tottenham have been linked with a lot of players in recent weeks, but a new name has now emerged: Tarik Muharemovic.
Tarik Muharemovic to cost £26m
Tottenham’s rearguard could undergo a re-jig at the end of the season, regardless of whether they avoid relegation.
Cristian Romero is wanted by Atletico Madrid, among other clubs, while Micky van de Ven hasn’t committed his long-term future to Tottenham.
Luka Vuskovic wants to remain at Hamburg for another season as he continues to develop into one of the finest central defenders on the planet, while Radu Dragusin has emerged as a target for Fiorentina.
A central defender is likely to be signed in the summer, and Tarik Muharemovic’s name has been thrown into the mix.
According to TuttoSport, Tottenham are vying for the Bosnian’s signature in the summer as he continues to impress for Sassuolo and the national team.
The 23-year-old showed his class on the grandest stage during the international break with an assured display against Italy as Bosnia booked a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The report also mentions interest from Aston Villa, while Bournemouth made an unsuccessful attempt to sign him in January. Sassuolo want at least £26m for the defender, but if he continues in the same vein at the World Cup, his value could continue to soar.
Muharemovic the perfect fit for Tottenham
It goes without saying that Tottenham have underperformed drastically this season as their squad is good enough to play in Europe.
However, De Zerbi has a handful of holes to address, so they are expected to make a few additions to their squad in the summer.
In that case, they can’t afford to overspend on players, so Muharemovic’s price tag makes him an intriguing option.
As relayed by Transfermarkt, Serie A expert Stefano Bounfino described the Bosnian as a consistent player who has worked hard to iron out his mistakes this season.
“He confirmed this in Serie A, even against top clubs and great strikers. He made a few mistakes, but this is understandable for a centre-back of this age playing for a newly promoted team.
“He has found great consistency and his place in the starting lineup has never been questioned.”
De Zerbi knows a thing or two about Sassuolo after his successful stint with the Serie A side before moving on, so if he were to make a move for Muharemovic, he would at least be able to pick up the phone and speak to the club’s top brass.
Keep an eye on this one as it looks like a transfer that might have legs.
