Tottenham announce Baldini departure

Tottenham Hotspur have announced today that technical director Franco Baldini has left the club by mutual consent in order to spend some time out of football.

The club statement released on the Tottenham website says “Franco joined us as Technical Director in June 2013 from AS Roma where he was General Director. He leaves us now to spend time outside of club football.”

“We wish him all the best for the future.”

Originally arriving at the club in the summer of 2013, Baldini was the driving force behind the acquisitions that summer which included the likes of Roberto Soldado, Nacer Chadli, Paulinho, Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela.

Baldini originally began working in England as assistant manager to Fabio Capello and departed along with Capello after England’s successful qualifying campaign for Euro 2012. He then joined Roma as their general manager, but left after only 18 months in the role after disposing of now Barcelona manager Luis Enrique for Zdenek Zeman.

Since arriving at Spurs, four of the seven players he signed in the summer of 2013 have left for greatly reduced fees with only Christain Eriksen playing well consistently, with Nacer Chadli playing well on occasion and Erik Lamela only now is starting to produce what was expected of him when he was signed.

Since Mauricio Pochettino arrived at the club in the summer of 2014, Baldini’s role at the club has been greatly reduced due to head of recruitment Paul Mitchell joining the club.

It’s fair to say that Baldini’s time at the club will not be fondly remembered and he will be remembered as the man who wasted the Gareth Bale money.
