Tottenham Hotspur have received a major boost in their pursuit of Cody Gakpo after Fabrizio Romano insisted the proposed transfer remains firmly alive despite fresh doubts over a deal.
Alex Crook suggested on Tuesday night that he did not expect Liverpool to sell the Netherlands international before the transfer window closes.
However, Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that negotiations between Tottenham and Liverpool remain ongoing, with Gakpo open to making the move to North London.
Fabrizio Romano provides huge Cody Gakpo update
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said the negotiation for Gakpo to join Tottenham is “still ongoing” and described the potential transfer as “still absolutely on.”
The transfer expert also revealed that Gakpo is open to joining Spurs and that personal terms are not considered a problem.
Tottenham still need to reach a financial agreement with Liverpool, which remains the major obstacle before a deal can advance.
It represents an important turnaround after Read Tottenham reported on Tuesday night that serious doubts had emerged over Spurs’ chances of signing Gakpo.
Crook had been told by Liverpool sources that Gakpo impressed during pre-season and could thrive under Andoni Iraola, leading the talkSPORT journalist to suggest he did not expect the transfer to happen.
Romano has now directly pushed back against the suggestion that negotiations have collapsed.
Liverpool’s own transfer activity could still determine what happens next.
Romano says the Reds intend to sign two wingers should Gakpo move to Tottenham, with Paris Saint-Germain attacker Bradley Barcola their leading target.
That could also have consequences elsewhere in Roberto De Zerbi’s squad.
Spurs have already delayed one potential departure while their attacking recruitment remains unresolved. Mikey Moore’s proposed loan move to FC Köln has been held up while Tottenham wait for greater clarity over their attempts to sign Gakpo and Savinho.
Tottenham therefore still have work to do before Gakpo can be considered close to joining.
However, less than 24 hours after significant doubts emerged over the move, Romano’s latest information makes clear that Spurs remain firmly involved in negotiations.
