Tottenham Hotspur have started implementing major changes at Hotspur Way as the club attempts to finally get on top of the injury problems that have plagued the squad over the past two seasons.
Performance director Dan Lewindon is leading the overhaul, with Tottenham changing both their facilities and the way individual players are managed.
The timing is significant. Roberto De Zerbi is still dealing with several fitness concerns ahead of Saturday’s Premier League opener against Brentford.
Tottenham make major Hotspur Way changes
The Standard reports that Tottenham have begun implementing changes behind the scenes following their recent injury nightmare.
Hotspur Way’s gym is being revamped, while Spurs are also moving towards more personalised care for individual players.
A previous report from the same outlet explained that Tottenham have introduced a pod-based system. Groups of four to six players work closely with a physio and sports scientist, allowing staff to build a better understanding of their individual fitness and rehabilitation requirements.
Lewindon led an internal investigation into Tottenham’s injury problems after last season and now oversees the club’s medical, sports science, nutrition and psychology departments.
The changes cannot come quickly enough.
James Maddison is still being carefully managed after his ACL injury, while Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie failed to play a minute during pre-season.
Dominic Solanke is also considered a doubt for Brentford after an injury-hit campaign. That could increase the importance of Richarlison, whose Tottenham future remains uncertain despite the club refusing to let him leave cheaply.
Mohammed Kudus has not played since January, while Mateus Fernandes has also dealt with calf fatigue during pre-season.
Spurs have invested heavily in rebuilding De Zerbi’s squad, but improving player availability could ultimately prove just as important.
Tottenham clearly recognise that something has needed to change. Their new medical structure will now be tested as the Premier League season begins.
