Roberto De Zerbi has told any unhappy Tottenham player to leave the club as uncertainty continues over Lucas Bergvall’s future.
De Zerbi delivered his message before Tottenham’s pre-season friendly against Auckland FC in New Zealand.
“Who is not happy, is not proud to stay here, has to leave,” the Italian told Tottenham’s official website.
The Spurs boss wants players who are motivated to represent the club at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, he stressed that he has not yet spoken directly to Bergvall about his plans.
Lucas Bergvall transfer update after De Zerbi comments
De Zerbi described the Sweden international as a “big, big talent” and said he would be happy for him to remain in north London.
However, the manager also opened the door to an exit if Bergvall wants a different opportunity. De Zerbi plans to speak with the midfielder before Spurs reach a decision alongside Johan Lange and Vinai Venkatesham.
Competition for places has increased following the arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. Bergvall started De Zerbi’s first match in charge but received only four substitute appearances afterwards.
Nottingham Forest have already had a proposal worth around £38million rejected. ReadTottenham also reported that Spurs turned down Newcastle United’s £46million offer and would consider selling only at the right price.
Bergvall remains under contract until 2031, leaving Tottenham with a strong negotiating position. Spurs do not need to accept a reduced offer simply because the 20-year-old wants more regular football.
The latest Lucas Bergvall transfer update places the decision with the player. De Zerbi has made clear that he values Bergvall, but he will not attempt to retain somebody who is no longer committed to his project.
