Tottenham Hotspur have rejected a £46m offer from Newcastle United for Lucas Bergvall despite the midfielder expressing a desire to leave this summer.
Newcastle’s proposal exceeded the approaches made by Nottingham Forest, but Spurs immediately turned it down.
According to David Ornstein, Tottenham have rejected every offer received for Bergvall so far. The club could still consider selling the 20-year-old if an interested side reaches their valuation.
Bergvall remains under contract until June 2031, leaving Spurs in a strong negotiating position. However, the Sweden international has informed the club that he would prefer to pursue a new opportunity before the transfer window closes.
Tottenham demand more after Newcastle bid
Bergvall’s route into Roberto De Zerbi’s midfield has narrowed following the arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
Spurs have spent around £185m on the pair, creating fierce competition for places despite Bergvall making 33 appearances across all competitions last season.
Newcastle have now entered the race after selling Tonali to Tottenham. They also missed out on Johan Manzambi, who joined Aston Villa after initially appearing close to a move to St James’ Park.
Nottingham Forest remain interested after having an offer worth around £38m rejected. As Read Tottenham reported following Forest’s latest transfer developments, Bergvall is their leading target following Elliot Anderson’s move to Manchester City.
Tottenham paid Djurgården around £8.5m for Bergvall in 2024. Accepting an offer above £50m would therefore produce a considerable profit on a player who has already made 78 appearances for the club.
Spurs are not actively forcing Bergvall out, but their significant midfield investment has weakened his prospects of regular starts.
Newcastle’s rejected offer may now encourage Forest or another interested club to return with an improved proposal.
