Tottenham prepare ruthless clear-out after £200m De Zerbi spree

Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to sanction further player sales as they attempt to finance Roberto De Zerbi’s major summer rebuild.

Spurs have already spent more than £200m on six senior additions, but their work is not finished. The club are now aiming to become more decisive in moving on players whose opportunities could be restricted next season.

According to Standard Sport, Lucas Bergvall and Djed Spence are among those who could leave if Tottenham receive acceptable offers. Spurs are not actively pushing either player out, but they are prepared to listen.

Bergvall and Spence can unlock more Tottenham business

Bergvall has informed Tottenham that he wants to explore other opportunities after falling further down De Zerbi’s midfield order.

The arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have created intense competition for places. Tottenham spent a combined £185m on the pair, leaving Bergvall concerned about his prospects of regular football.

Newcastle United have already seen a £46m bid rejected, while Nottingham Forest also remain interested. Spurs retain control because the 20-year-old is contracted until 2031, but they could consider selling if their valuation is met.

As Read Tottenham recently examined, RB Leipzig midfielder Arthur Vermeeren is among the possible options should Bergvall depart. The Belgian previously worked with De Zerbi at Marseille.

Spence could also command a significant fee following his impressive performances for England at the World Cup. Inter Milan have opened talks, although their valuation remains below Tottenham’s demands.

Read Tottenham reported that Inter view Spence as a leading right wing-back target, with the player believed to be open to the move. Tottenham would prefer to keep him but may accept a strong proposal.

Vuskovic sale provides Tottenham with a new template

Luka Vuskovic’s move to Brighton showed how Tottenham intend to approach their outgoing business.

Spurs agreed a package worth up to £50m for a defender who had not made a competitive senior appearance for the club. The agreement also included a sell-on clause and matching rights, allowing Tottenham to protect their future position.

Previous Tottenham squads have contained players who remained at the club after falling outside the manager’s plans. Contracts ran down, valuations dropped and loans often delayed permanent decisions.

The current approach appears more aggressive. De Zerbi has received significant backing to construct his squad, but Tottenham also want to recover strong fees from players who no longer have clear roles.

Sky Sports calculated that Tottenham’s spending had reached around £237m following the deals for Tonali and Fernandes. Further attacking additions could push the final figure considerably higher.

Tottenham cannot weaken De Zerbi’s squad too quickly

Selling Bergvall and Spence would generate valuable funds, but both players still offer qualities Tottenham may struggle to replace.

Bergvall remains one of the club’s leading young talents. His value could increase significantly if he earns regular minutes and continues his international development.

Spence can play on either side of the defence and would provide experienced cover across a demanding Premier League season. His World Cup performances have also strengthened his claim for a larger role.

Tottenham must therefore separate players who genuinely lack a pathway from those who may still become important under De Zerbi.

Their summer spending has signalled a dramatic change in ambition. Selling well must now support the next stage without leaving the squad short once the transfer window closes.
