Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering a move for RB Leipzig midfielder Arthur Vermeeren if Lucas Bergvall leaves this summer.
Nottingham Forest have already tested Spurs with a £38million offer for Bergvall. Tottenham rejected the proposal, but Forest could return with an improved bid closer to the club’s £50m valuation.
Bergvall wants regular football after Tottenham added Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes to Roberto De Zerbi’s midfield. Spurs could therefore consider a sale if Forest meet their demands.
According to CaughtOffside, Tottenham have placed Vermeeren on their shortlist. RB Leipzig could listen to offers worth around €30m, roughly £26m.
De Zerbi already knows Vermeeren
Vermeeren spent last season on loan at Marseille and worked under De Zerbi before the Italian left in February.
The 21-year-old can receive the ball under pressure and dictate play from deep. Bundesliga’s official profile previously compared his style with Joshua Kimmich because of his passing range and tactical intelligence.
Marseille chose not to activate their €20m option, so Vermeeren returned to Leipzig. The German club remain open to a permanent sale if an interested team meets their valuation.
Tottenham have not submitted an offer. They may also keep Bergvall despite Forest’s interest, with earlier reports stating Spurs had told the Sweden international he was not for sale.
As Read Tottenham reported after Tonali’s arrival, De Zerbi now has the midfield controller he wanted. Vermeeren would offer younger cover rather than arrive as an automatic starter.
A move will depend on Bergvall’s future. Tottenham currently view Vermeeren as an option, not an active deal.
