At a glance:
- Tottenham have improved under Roberto De Zerbi
- Stats show exponential rise
- They are first in PL on three metrics
Tottenham Hotspur have had three managers in an abysmal 2025-26 season, as they appointed Roberto De Zerbi on March 31.
Spurs had sacked Ange Postecoglou after their Europa League win last season, and it ended up being a big mistake. They appointed Thomas Frank, who pushed them into a relegation battle. Interim manager Igor Tudor was unable to stop the downward spiral.
De Zerbi, however, has turned things around brilliantly at Tottenham. Not only has he been able to gain results, but their performances have improved as well.
Tottenham are best in the Premier League under De Zerbi
Having won just five points in 14 previous Premier League games, Tottenham have now managed seven points in their last three. They have won back-to-back league games for the first time since the first two games of the season.
They could have easily had three wins as well, had they not conceded a stoppage-time goal in their draw against Brighton.
All these things point to a massive improvement under De Zerbi. The Italian has shown great tactical improvement, which has worked despite the club suffering a major injury crisis. Their pressing has improved, which has led to every aspect of their game getting better.

Sky Sports compared Tottenham’s statistics before and after De Zerbi’s arrival this season, and there is a huge gap. Take a look below:
| Before De Zerbi | PL Rank | Metric | After De Zerbi | PL Rank |
| 4.35 | 15th | Shots conceded on target | 2 | 1st |
| 7.8 | 16th | Interceptions | 11 | 1st |
| 3.7 | 10th | Possession won in attacking third | 5.3 | 1st |
These statistics are Premier League averages this season, as compared to all the other teams.
De Zerbi deserves immense credit for Tottenham resurgence
Spurs have some really good players, who played excellent football under Postecoglou when they were available.
De Zerbi highlighted this in his first few press conferences and interviews, giving these players confidence. It has worked really well, which is evidenced by the aforementioned statistics.
It becomes even more impressive when you consider the injury crisis. De Zerbi lost captain Cristian Romero in his first game due to injury, while Mohammed Kudus suffered a setback in his recovery.
Moreover, their only fit creative player, Xavi Simons, suffered an ACL injury in the Italian’s third game, while Dominic Solanke also got injured.

However, De Zerbi didn’t use this as an excuse and coached a tactical masterclass against Aston Villa. The Italian deserves a lot of credit for changing Tottenham’s fortunes around.
The work isn’t complete yet, as Tottenham are just one point above the relegation zone. However, the signs have been really good so far.
