At a glance:
- Tottenham want James Tavernier
- Defender set to leave Rangers for free
- Englishman is the highest-scoring right back of all time
Tottenham’s plans for the summer transfer window are slowly starting to take shape.
Roberto De Zerbi is wasting no time in reinforcing his squad, although a lot could depend on Premier League safety.
Tottenham already have verbal agreements with Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson as they look to shore up their backline.
And now, if reports are to be believed, they are looking to secure the signing of another defender on a free transfer.
Tottenham want James Tavernier
Our colleagues at Read Rangers covered James Tavernier’s imminent departure from Ibrox, so his situation is well known.
The Englishman is one of their greatest players of the modern era and is seeking a new chapter in the twilight years of his career.
And TEAMtalk report that Tottenham want to snap up Tavernier on a free transfer, although the deal hinges on whether or not they avoid relegation.
Primarily a right-back, the 34-year-old has scored 152 goals in his professional career, making him the highest-scoring right-back in football history.
He has also served as Rangers’ captain and has been with the club’s senior squad for 11 years, so he’s well and truly an experienced campaigner.
Experience is the name of the game
Judging from recent transfer reports, Tottenham are targeting experienced players to add to their leadership group.
With Cristian Romero linked with a transfer, the North London side are braced for their captain’s departure.

The potential arrivals of Tavernier and Robertson could help in this regard, while Senesi is also an experienced player in his own right.
Furthermore, each of these players would arrive on free transfers, which would allow Tottenham to splurge on other areas of the pitch.
Tavernier has made over 500 appearances for Rangers since joining the club from Wigan Athletic in 2015.
Tottenham already have Pedro Porro and Djed Spence, but the Englishman’s experience and set-piece ability immediately make him a punt worth taking.
De Zerbi and co can’t really go wrong with this one as Tavernier also knows the English game quite well.
Tottenham’s strategy is quickly becoming clear: Experienced, free transfers across Europe that would help them breed a new culture at the club.
And judging by how the current season has gone, we can’t fault their logic.
